Dermott was taken with the 34th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, but would play one and a half years with their AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies before eventually making the jump to the NHL in 2017-18.
In his first taste of NHL hockey, he played in 37 games in a Maple Leafs sweater and had 13 points (1G, 12A).
He'd play with the Maple Leafs until the 2022 trade deadline when he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for a third round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
In 2023, he'd sign with the Arizona Coyotes, where he'd play for a season and then later accepted a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers. But after 10 games, he was put on waivers and claimed by the Minnesota Wild.
Once again waived, he was re-claimed by the Oilers and would play the rest of the year with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
