Edmonton Oilers lose out on acquiring top NHL defenseman

The Edmonton Oilers had a heavy interest in Kraken defenseman Adam Larsson, but he's just signed an extension with Seattle, putting rumors to rest.
At 31, Swedish defenseman Adam Larsson seems destined to end his career with the Seattle Kraken after inking a deal that will more than likely see him through to retirement. Larsson had spent five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers from 2016 to 2021, and this year, he was a primary trade target for them as well.
Standing in at 6'3", playing as a right-shot, defensive-minded blueliner, Adam Larsson's the type of player built for playoff hockey. Having logged 838 NHL games, he's seen postseason action just 38 times, including some brief playoff appearances with Edmonton. Based on his style of play and his history with the club, a return to the Oilers for a playoff push would have made plenty of sense.
However, Adam Larsson left Edmonton for a fresh start after the sudden death of his father. He would have hardly entertained coming back to Edmonton, even if the Oilers had asked him to do so.
The Kraken, who will likely finish close to the bottom of the league standings this year, probably had to give Adam Larsson a little more to keep him around as a veteran presence on their rebuild. Oilers fans, no doubt, are sad to see him go and wish him well as he continues this next phase of his career.
