Edmonton Oilers goalie coach abandons team to go to Florida Panthers
The Edmonton Oilers lost top AHL goalie coach Sylvain Rodrigue earlier in the season, and he has just decided to take a job with the Florida Panthers.
According to NHL reporter Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, former AHL goalie coach of the Edmonton Oilers Sylvain Rodrigue is heading to the Florida Panthers to join their coaching staff as a goalie coach. It's still unclear whether he'll be working with their NHL team or their AHL affiliate.
Rodrigue has been a key figure in developing top goalies since he started with the Oilers in the 2018-19 season. Thanks to his coaching, goalies like Stuart Skinner, Calvin Pickard, and his son, Olivier Rodrigue, have all shown great progress.
Some Oilers fans might be upset to see Rodrigue leave, especially those who aren't happy with their current goalie coach, Dustin Schwartz. Schwartz has been with the Oilers since 2014, and during that time, several goalies have struggled. After ten years, some people think it might be time for a new approach.
While Oilers fans will likely wish Rodrigue the best in Florida, they might also be hoping for a change of their own goalie coaching soon.
