This evening, NHL analyst Matt Parks of The Hockey Writers has issued a warning to the Edmonton Oilers to reconsider signing Mattias Ekholm to an extension.

Earlier this week, reports came out that the Edmonton Oilers plan to get several extensions done this summer including one with veteran defenseman Mattias Ekholm.
Ekholm arrived to Edmonton in a blockbuster trade with the Nashville Predators and has been a steadying force on the back end for the last two and a half seasons with the Oilers.
That all changed during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs when Ekholm struggled mightily and looked to be showing signs of slowing down at age 35.
With the reports of Ekholm potentially re-signing Matt Parks of The Hockey Writers believes it would be a major mistake for the Oilers to offer Ekholm and extension without proof he can get back to an elite level.

NHL Analyst Warns The Edmonton Oilers To Reconsider Signing Mattias Ekholm To An Extension

During a recent piece for The Hockey News, Parks revealed he would urge the Oilers to take rhetorical patient approach with Ekholm and wait to re-sign him until later into the season.
While he was the perfect addition at the time, it looks like he's running out of gas, and his time in Edmonton might be limited. Therefore, the organization will benefit from taking a patient approach. It's important to re-sign certain players before their value increases, but that's not the case with Ekholm. If anything, his value will decrease.

Parks believes that if the Oilers hold off on an extension they could get Ekholm at a steep discount later in the year.
He's currently making $6.25 million, but that number should go down for his next deal.

It seems clear that the Edmonton Oilers do not intend to follow Parks' advice and will instead extend him as soon as possible.
As the season gets underway, it will be interesting to see if the Edmonton Oilers regret moving to sign Ekholm so soon.
