Stan Bowman is sitting down with Darnell Nurse this week. The conversation has been three years in the making.
Mark Spector of Sportsnet reports the Oilers are ready and willing to move the 31-year-old defenseman as soon as possible.
Multiple sources confirmed that Bowman has been quietly open to trading Nurse since the 2025 Stanley Cup Final.
Nurse posted just seven goals and 24 points in 82 games last season while carrying a $9.25 million cap hit.
His ice time dipped to 20:58 per game, the lowest mark of his career in nearly a decade.
Nurse's full no-movement clause gives him the power to block any deal. He used that exact leverage last summer and could do it again.
The clause that changes everything next July
On July 1, 2027, Nurse's full no-movement clause converts to a 10-team no-trade list. That single date reshapes the entire negotiation.
If Nurse refuses to waive this summer, he returns for one more season knowing his protection evaporates the following July.
Edmonton would then have the ability to deal him to 21 of 31 teams without his approval.
That timeline creates a reality Nurse cannot ignore. This summer might be the last time he gets to choose his next destination.
Why waiting actually costs Nurse more
A player entering the final year of full trade protection on a declining contract doesn't gain leverage by sitting still.
Nurse's production has trended downward for three consecutive seasons, and another year of diminishing numbers would only shrink the list of teams willing to absorb that cap hit.
Bowman knows the math, and so does Nurse's camp. The Oilers reportedly prefer to complete a deal before training camp, and for once the defenseman's best move might be cooperating with the team that wants to move on.
The real question isn't whether Edmonton wants this trade. It's whether Nurse recognizes that saying yes now gives him more control than saying no.
