Connor Zary met with the Department of Player Safety earlier today, and following this hearing, he has just learned his suspension fate for a controversial play. During the course of last night's game between the Flames and Canucks, defenseman Elias Pettersson let loose a monster but legal hit on Nazem Kadri. Connor Zary retaliated to this with an extremely dirtier maneuver.

Zary was given a two-minute minor for interference, but his problems were not over. The NHL Department of Player Safety scheduled a hearing for him earlier today, which led to them ultimately making a decision. The Department of Player Safety has now determined that Zary will now be suspended for 2 games

Pettersson remained in the game for a while but was diagnosed with an upper-body injury during the second intermission. Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet offered no news after the game, only that medical staff were still evaluating the 21-year-old.
Zary has never had supplemental discipline before
Zary's action came out of the blue, as he's not the kind of player to play stupidly. The 23-year-old had just returned from an injury and has never had supplemental discipline in his 112-game NHL career. Nevertheless, because the hit was to Pettersson's head and caused him to exit the game, it definitely required further investigation. With Zary now out of the lineup the Flames will have to look elsewhere for production up front. The Flames play their next game against the Colorado Avalanche, while the Vancouver Canucks take on Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks.
