Radko Gudas was suspended five games this season for kneeling Auston Matthews. Now his name is circling Toronto as a serious free-agent target.
The 36-year-old defenseman is an unrestricted free agent after his three-year, $12 million deal with Anaheim expired.
He ranked second among all NHL defensemen in hits during the 2024-25 season and blocked 420 shots across the contract.
He posted a +16 rating over three seasons in Anaheim and led Ducks blueliners in both hits and blocked shots.
Those are not flashy numbers, but they are the numbers of a defenseman who earns his paycheque every shift.
What makes the Toronto fit uncomfortable and compelling
The Leafs are not pursuing Gudas because they forgot about the Matthews incident. They are pursuing him because John Chayka needs experienced, physical players around a very young roster.
Toronto finished last in the Atlantic Division this past season and is in the early stages of a rebuild. A two-to-three year term at $3.5 to $4 million annually gives Chayka a veteran anchor without overpaying on a team that has cap room and no clear defensive identity yet.
Florida is the cleaner fit, Toronto is the bolder one
The Panthers connection is straightforward. Gudas helped push Florida to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final and already knows the system, the staff, and the expectations.
Toronto is the more complicated ask. Signing the man who kneeled your franchise player signals that Chayka is building around toughness and character over optics.
That framing is either smart veteran presence for a rebuilding core or a storyline nobody in the dressing room asked for.
Either way, Gudas entering a Leafs uniform would be one of the more fascinating signings of the summer.
